I am honored to be joining the Alliance for CEhp Board of Directors this year. The health care enterprise faces transformational changes and those of us who work in the Continuing Medical Education (CME/CE) profession have a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact. As a CEhp community, we also have the opportunity to demonstrate the value of what we do to all the different stakeholders in healthcare.
Some may know that the Alliance for CEhp used to be called the Alliance for CME. In 2011, the Alliance took steps to respond to the demands for team-based care and changed its name to the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (CEhp). The Alliance was founded in 1975 by Lewis Miller. This year, the Alliance created a new award to honor Lewis Miller and Dennis Wentz, MD for all their contributions in the CEhp field. Congratulations to Lew and Dennis! The CME/CE enterprise has changed significantly since the 70's (the ACCME was founded in 1981) and CME/CE will continue to change as we shift our mindset towards improving health care (and not just issuing CE credits) through quality improvement programs, research initiatives, and by integrating patient education. As more education providers achieve Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education, we can also expect to see more educational initiatives aimed at helping clinicians develop and implement interprofessional collaborative practice in the health care setting.
